UPS Store Clerk

These are some good photos, says the UPS Store clerk as she inspects her printing work.

Welp, they are photos from a relationship that just ended, I mumble through my mask.  I’m hoping that these hand-picked photos will refresh my ex’s memory as to how awesome we were.

I’m sorry to hear that.  You all look so happy.

That’s what I thought, and the tears start welling up.

I didn’t mean to upset you, just…

It’s okay. It is a fact of life these days.  This is a last ditch effort to try to win her back.

And you want to ship this?

Yep, and I want it in something big so it doesn’t go into her mailbox that she never opens.  I start eyeing a big padded manila envelope.

You should do that one, she says pointing to a big, regal, 11x17x4 matte finished white box.  I appreciate her confidence, like she’s helped many a man win back the love of his life.  I grab it and rest the two 11x17 pages of photos at the bottom beneath my neatly stapled three page letter.  She says she’ll add some filler paper and wrap it in plastic to keep it from getting wet.

I hope it works, she offers.

Very low likelihood.

Well, who knows.  Weirder things have happened.

Then she mumbles something through her mask and I debate asking for clarification, but I am clinging to every word from everyone I encounter, certain their words will be prophetic.

She repeats, while handing me my receipt, it means there are still some good people out there who fight for what they want.
